since there was shortage of housing as most were destroyed during wartime and the birth rate increasing, this resulted in overcrowding in homes. fhe singapore improvement trust built a lot of housing and shop units to accommodate the overcrowding

riots occured where people overturned and set cars on fire and rhe euro and eura were targeted
18 died 173 injured after three days of riots

the previous war had distrupted the education of young males and NS will distrupt it more. this caused 500 chinese educated students to protest on 13 may 1954 and the british deployed riot plolice. 26 were injured and chnese medium schools were closed the next day.
