Abstract Reasoning
pondering a deeper meaning beyond the concrete and literal
Attention
concentration, ability to focus on one specific thing
Consciousness
being aware of one’s own existence, feelings, and thoughts and being aware of the environment
Delirium
an acute confusional change or loss of consciousness and perceptual disturbance, may accompany acute illness, and usually resolves when the underlying cause is treated
Dementia
a gradual progressive process, causing decreased cognitive function even though the person is fully conscious and awake, and is not reversible
Language
using the voice to communicate one’s thoughts and feelings
Memory
ability to lay down and store experiences and perceptions for later recall
Mood
prolonged display of a person’s feelings
Orientation
awareness of objective world in relation to one’s self
Perceptions
awareness of objects through any of the five senses
Thought Content
“what” the person thinks, specific ideas, beliefs, the use of words
Thought Process
the “way” a person thinks, the logical train of thought
Alcohol abuse
one or more of the following events in a year: recurrent use resulting in failure to fulfill major role obligations; recurrent use in the hazardous situations; recurrent alcohol related legal problems; continued use despite social or interpersonal problems caused or exacerbated by alcohol
Alcohol dependence
Three or more of the following events in a year: tolerance; withdrawal; a great deal of time spent obtaining alcohol; using it; or recovering from its effects; important activities given up or reduced because of alcohol; drinking more or longer than intended; persistent desire or unsuccessful efforts to cut down or control alcohol use; use continued despite knowledge of having a psychological problem caused or exacerbated by alcohol.
At- risk Drinking
Men, 14 or more drinks/week or 4 or more drinks/occasion; Women, 7 or more drinks/week or 3 or more drinks/occasion.
