Chap 3 - Water and its spatial distribution Flashcards
Where is water found?
Oceans, lakes, rivers, soil, groundwater
What is an ocean
Large masses of water that are connected to one another
What is a lake
Water bodies that are surrounded by land
What is a river
Natural wide flows of freshwater across the land that store water temporarily before water flows into another water body
What is soil
Loose topmost layer of Earth’s surface where plants growW
Where is water found in soil
In the soil mosture
What is ground water
Ground water is water beneath the ground found below the surface of the Earth
What can’t Ocean water be drank?
Because the ocean water has too much salt to be used directly for drinking and other uses
Name the hydrological cycle
Evaporation:
Liquid water from oceans, lakes, rivers, and even the ground transforms into water vapor (a gas) due to heat from the sun.
Transpiration:
Plants release water vapor into the atmosphere through tiny pores on their leaves.
Condensation:
As water vapor rises and cools, it condenses back into liquid form, forming clouds.
Precipitation:
When water droplets in clouds become too heavy, they fall back to Earth as rain, snow, sleet, or hail.
Infiltration:
Some precipitation soaks into the ground, becoming groundwater.
State the process of precipitation
Water falls as rain, or snow if the air is cold enough
State the process of ground water in the hydrological cycle
Water that seeps into the ground may be absorbed by plants or stored as ground water
State the process of surface runoff
Water flows from the highlands and over the ground surface into streams and rivers
State the process of Evaporation
The Sun’s heat causes water to evaporate. Water changes into water vapour
State the process of transpiration
Plants give out water vapour through their leaves
State the process of condensation
Warn moist air cools as it rises. Water vapour changes into water droplets. Small droplets combine to form bigger droplets. Large amounts of water droplets gather to form clouds
What is a water budget
Water budget describes the flow of water in and out of an area. It tells us how much water is in an area
What is a water surplus and what are the effects of too much water surplus
Water surplus is when the input of water is more than the out put of water. Too much water surplus results in flooding
What is a water deficit and what is the affect of too much water deficit
Water deficit is when the output of water is more than the input of water. Too much water deficit will result in water shortage
Which natural processes result in the input of water in a water budget
Preciptation
Which natural processes result in the output of water in a water budget
Evaporation and transpiration
Is surface runoff an output in a water budget?
No.
