chap. 3 basic ideas Flashcards
1
Q
What are absolute extrema?
A
The y-values that are greater or less than the y-val.s for ALL of the other pts. on the interval.
2
Q
What does EVT say?
A
If f is continuous on a closed interval, f has an abs. min. and max.
3
Q
What are relative extrema?
A
The defined point where the y-value has an open interval (not necessarily continuous) in which it is greater or less than the y-val.s for those pts. These are critical points.
4
Q
What is a critical number?
A
The defined number where f’(x)=0 or f’(x) is undef. If f(x) and f’(x) are undef, then it is a vertical asy.
5
Q
What is a point of inflection?
A
A point where either f”(x)=0 or f”(x) is undefined and f”(x) changes signs (or f’(x) changes directions).
