Chap 2 Kpt Flashcards
Why do liquids have fixed volumes, but not fixed shapes while solids have fixed volumes and shapes
Particles in a liquid and solid are packed closely tgt -> fixed vol
Particles in a liquid can slide last one another, particles in solids vibrate only about their fixed positions -> liquids no fixed shapes
Describe in terms of particle movement and temp what happens during vapour deposition of carbon dioxide
Movement of particles of carbon dioxide change from moving rapidly in all directions in gaseous state to vibrating about their fixed positions in the solid state. The temp remains constant
2 advantages of using dry ice instead of ice (solid water)
Dry ice is colder than water, so it is better at keeping the temp low
Dry ice sublimes so it is less messy as it does not leave a liquid behind
Using kpt, describe what happens to particles when converting to gaseous state from liquid
Particles in liquid gain heat and slide faster over each other. When they have enough energy, they overcome attractive forces and move far apart in random directions at fast speeds
