Chap 2: Kinematics Flashcards
What is speed?
Distance travelled per unit time
- distance/time (m/s)
What is velocity?
Change in displacement per unit time
- displacement/time (m/s)
What is acceleration?
Rate of change of velocity
- change of velocity/time {m/s^2)
Formula for acceleration?
a = (v-u)/t(2)-t(1)
a - acceleration
v - final velocity
u - initial velocity
t - time taken
What is deceleration?
Negative acceleration
Does zero acceleration mean the object at rest?
No as zero acceleration mean constant velocity, hence the object is moving at a constant rate
In what conditions do the object slow down?
When acceleration is opposite of velocity.
In what conditions do the object speed up?
When acceleration is same direction of velocity.
In displacement time graph, what does the gradient give us?
Velocity
What does a straight line (with no gradient) on a displacement time graph represent?
Object is at rest
What does a diagonal line mean in a displacement time graph?
Uniformed/Constant velocity
What does a curved line mean in a displacement time graph?
Non-uniform increasing/decreasing velocity
(study the different types of graphs in notes!)
What does the gradient give us in a velocity time graph?
Acceleration
What does a straight line directly on the x axis represent on a velocity time graph?
Object is at rest (Zero velocity and acceleration)
What does a straight line (not on the x axis) represent on a velocity time graph?
Uniformed/Constant velocity, zero acceleration
