CHAP 11 FLUID AND ELECTROLYTES Flashcards
Fluid and Electrolyte Balance
the balance affected by the movement, replacement, transformation, retention and /or excretion of various materials essential to life.
Water
all biochems are bathed in water and nearly all reactions take place in aqueous medium.
capillary bed
a network of tiny blood vessels joining arterioles and venules. Through their walls blood and tissue cells exchange various substances.
Interstitial
are between cells
intracellular
within a cell or cells
plasma
the fluid portion of blood
hydrostatic
a pushing pressure at the arterial end of the capillary bed. forces H20, Oxygen and nutrients through capillary walls into interstitial spaces.
Diffusion
movement of molecules from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
Osmotic Factors
colloid osmotic pressure which is caused by proteins
osmotic pressure which is created primarily by sodium
What causes Arterial hydrostatic pressure?
the pumping action of the heart
Venous colloid osmotic pressure
created by plasma proteins. Pulls water, electrolytes and cell waste products into the capillary through the capillary walls.
What percentage of water loss is dangerous
10%…if it reaches 20% its lethal
diffusion
the movement of molecules from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration
What elements are carried between the blood and the cells?
Oxygen and carbon dioxide, nutrients and cell waste products and electrolytes
What helps govern the movement of materials between the blood and the cells?
diffusion and hydrostatic pressure, osomotic pressure and colloid osmotic pressure
