Adversary system
A judicial system in which the court of law is a neutral arena where two parties argue their differences
Judicial Review
Power of a court to determine whether a law or government regulation is consistent with the US constitution
Criminal law
A law that defines crimes against the public order
Civil law
A law that governs relationships between individuals and defines their legal rights
Prosecutor
Government lawyer who tries criminal cases, referred to as district attorney
Defendant
In a criminal action the person accused of an offense
Plea bargain
An agreement between a prosecutor and a defendant that the defendant Weill plead guilty to a lesser offense to avoid standing trail for a more serious offense.
Justiciable dispute
A dispute growing out of an actual case of controversy that is capable of settlement by legal methods
Plantif
Party investigating a civil lawsuit

The chief law enforcement officer in the US and the head of the department of justice
Solicitor general
Third ranking official in the depart of justice who is responsible for representing the U.S. in cases before the U.S. Supreme Court

An arrangement whereby public officials are hired to provide legal assistance to those accused of crimes unable to hire their own attorney
