Theories about muscle contraction
Theories of muscle contraction through time
1574: Hieronymus Fabricius believed that the muscle contractile power resides in its fibrous tendons (not actual muscle fiber) 1660: Anton Van Leewenhoek invented the microscope allowing for direct visualization of muscle fibers 1800s: thought that heat alone caused muscles to contract Late 1800s: Walter Fletcher and Sir Frederick Gowland Hopkins found that contracting muscle generated lactate 1940-50s: Huxley’s Sliding Filament Theory was adopted
