Chap 1 Matter, Energy, Measurement Flashcards
What is Matter?
MATTER is anything that has MASS and takes up SPACE
What is Chemistry?
CHEMISTRY is the SCIENCE that deals with MATTER; the structure and properties of matter; the transformations from one form of matter to another
What is Chemical Change/Chemical Reaction?
Chemical Change/Reaction happens when substances are used up (disappear) and others are formed to take their places.
What are Physical Changes?
Physical Changes occur when the conversion from one state to another is a PHYSICAL change; the identities of the substances do NOT change; involves changes of STATE
What are examples of Physical Properties?
These are properties that do NOT involve chemical reactions such as: density, color, melting point, and physical state (liquid, solid, gas)
How do you calc density?
d = m/V
d=density
m=mass
V=volume
What is Scientific Method?
SCIENTIFIC METHOD is the testing of theories
What is a Fact?
A FACT is a statement based on DIRECT experience; it is CONSISTENT and REPRODUCIBLE OBSERVATION
What is a HYPOTHESIS?
A HYPOTHESIS is a statement that is PROPOSED, without actual proof, to explain the facts and their relationship
What is a Theory?
A THEORY is the same a hypotheses except we have stronger belief in it b/c more evidence supports it.
What is serendipity?
SERENDIPITY is scientific discoveries resulting from CHANCE or OBSERVATION
What is specific gravity
Is always equal to its density g/ml or g/cc
What is kinetic energy (KE)
Energy of motion; any object moving possess KE
How do you calc kinetic energy
KE = 1/2mv^2
m-mass
v-velocity
What is Specific heat
Amt of heat necessary to raise the temp of 1g of any substance by 1°C
