When IPE was born? What is important to keep in mind?
- IPE was born in the 1970’ (both in USA and UK).
- Until late 19e siècle, there was no clear distinction btw politics and economy.
Who are the key people in the tradition of the discipline?
What do they have in common?
- Adam Smith, David Ricardo, Friedrich List, Hamilton, Karl Marx.
- They were polymaths : meaning they dealt with everything.
What can you say about Marxists and later Dependencia Theory?
- For Marxists, the key concept for understanding global capitalism is imperialism: some states dominate other states and war is the product of imperialist rivarly.
- Dependencia Theory (Raul) came after WW2 withn the colonial preoccupations
Why does IPE appear in the 70’?
The historical context of the time showed that int economy can not be understood without politics (dollar crisis, oil shocks..).
Who are the intellectual entrepreneurs of IPE?
- USA: Keohane and Nye: political scientist influenced by institutionalist.
- UK: Strange: who wrote a manifesto calling to bridge the gap btw the 2 disciplines.
IPE is a tale of 2 heterodoxies.
What is the difference btw American IPE and Bristish IPE?
- American IPE: is more state-centric and consider itself as branch of IR.
- British IPE: is more interested in the rise of non-state actors and do not consider itself as a branch of IR. + very ambitious agenda
What is the difference btw old and new IPE?
- Old IPE (70’): more focus on the international level.
- New IPE: look more at the domestic sources of foreign policy (more micro).
IPE today try to understand the relationship btw which variables (3) ?
- Domestic interest
- Domestic and int institutions.
- Int bargaining btw states.

Milner, Frieden, Lake and Simmons
