Chap. 1 Bomb, Fuzes, & Associated Components Flashcards
What are two type of fuzes?
Mechanical or electrical
What a the maximum length of time the the MK 376 tail fuzes can be used after they are removed from the container?
Must be disposed of according to current directives.
What is a fuze?
A device that causes the detonation of an explosive charge at the proper time after certain conditions are met.
The amount of time or vane revolutions needed for firing train to be aligned after the bomb is released or from time of release until the bomb is fully armed.
Arming time
When the functioning time of a fuze is longer that 0.005 second.
Delay
A means by which a fuze is physically determined to be in a safe or armed condition.
External Evidence of Arming (EEA)
The time required for a fuze to detonate after impact or a present time.
Functioning Time
When the functioning time of a fuze is 0.0003 or less.
Instantaneous
When the functioning time of a fuze is 0.0003 to 0.0005 second.
Non Delay
The action that causes a fuze to detonate before impact when any substantial object is detected at a predetermined distance from the fuze.
Proximity (VT)
The distance along the trajectory that a bomb travels from the releasing aircraft in an unarmed condition.
Safe Air Travel (SAT)
What is the time or number of arming vane revolutions needed for the firing train to align after a bomb is released?
Arming time (SST)
What means is used to initiate an electrical fuze?
Electrical impulse
What mechanical time fuze is used with dispenser weapons?
MK 339 Mod 1
The primary and option functioning delay of the MK 339 fuze is set at factory. What means can be used to change the settings?
By adjusting the primary and option time setting dials.
How can you tell if the MK 339 fuze has shifted from primary to the option delay?
By checking the time setting observation window of the fuze.
An FMU-143/B tail fuze is used with which weapon?
GBU-24B/B
What electronic bomb fuze is used in MK 80/ BLU 100 general purpose bombs including laser guided bombs?
FMU-139
What electronic bomb fuze is used for retarded delivery of the MK 80/ BLU 100 bomb?
FMU-139
What type of bomb is used in most routine bombing operations?
General-purpose (GP) bombs- currently the MK 80/BLU 100 series
Identification of BLU-110/111/117 A/B bombs loaded with PBXN-109 can be made by the stencil on the bomb body (front and rear) and by what other means?
Three yellow bands on the nose
A bomb body is shipped with a plastic plug installed in the nose and tail fuze wells to prevent what occurrences?
Damage to the internal threads and moisture from entering the fuze wells
When shipping bombs, what type of pallet is used?
Metal
When shipping, what factor determines the number of bombs that are located on each metal pallet?
The size of bombs
Arming wire assemblies are used for what purpose?
Maintain ordnance components in a safe condition until the actual release of a weapon from an aircraft.
Premature or accidental withdrawal of an arming wire from a component is prevented by the installation of which of the following devices.
Dexter Safety Clips
A conical fin assembly is attached to the aft end of a bomb by what means?
Set screws
What bomb fin is used with the MK-82/BLU-111 to provide a retarded (high drag) bomb delivery for the aircraft?
BSU-86
What general-purpose bomb, if any, is used with the BSU-85/B AIR inflatable retarder?
MK-83/BLU-110
How do laser-guided bombs detect a target?
Laser beam illumination
