Chap 1 Flashcards
Facts, especially numerical facts, collected together for reference or information.
Data
Knowledge communicated concerning some particular fact.
Information
is a tool for creating new understanding from data.
Statistics
are methods of organizing, summarizing, and presenting data in a convenient and informative way. These methods include graphical summaries and numerical techniques.
Descriptive Statistics
are methods used to make conclusions or inferences concerning some unknown aspect of a population based on data from a sample. Statistical inference is the process of making an estimate, prediction, or decision about a population based on a sample.
Inferential statistics
is a collection of all possible individuals, objects, or measurements of interest;
Population
is a numerical measurement describing some characteristic of a population.
Parameter
is a portion, or part, of the population of interest;
Sample
is a numerical measurement describing some characteristic of a sample.
Statistic
we collect data from the entire population
Census
Collecting, summarizing, and processing data to transform data into information
Descriptive statistics
provide the bases for predictions, forecasts, and estimates that are used to transform information into knowledge
Inferential statistics
is the collection of all items of interest or under investigation
Population
is an observed subset of the population
Sample
is a specific characteristic of a population
Parameter
is a specific characteristic of a sample
Statistic
is a procedure in which
each member of the population is chosen strictly by chance,
each member of the population is equally likely to be chosen,
and
every possible sample of n objects is equally likely to be chosen
Simple random sampling
The resulting sample is called a
Random sample
