Chaoters 22-28 Flashcards

Q

In chapter 23, how does Offred illustrate the inequality between herself and the commander?

A

“There’s no doubt who hold the real power”

Offred continues to play scrabble with the commander despite the risks it puts her in, because there would also be a danger in not complying to him due to their power imbalance.

(Can be compared to Stanley’s abuse of Stella, how she has grown use to putting up with the abuse and that there’s a danger in both complying and not complying to him.)

Q

Even before the regime, Luke seemed to have misogynistic ideals. What does Offred say in chapter 28 which proves this?

A

“I didn’t go to any marches. Luke said it would be futile and that I had to think about them, my family… I started doing more housework, more baking.”

Misogynistic idea that women should be more concerned with household duties rather than working. Also shows how Luke holds the power in their relationship. Even more progressive men can hold and perpetuate patriarchal ideals when it benefits them.
