Chaoter 12: Overview Of The Nervou System Flashcards
CNS
Brain & spinal cord
PNS
All nervous tissue outside of the CNS
Nerve
Bundle of hundreds to thousands of axons plus connective tissue & blood vessels
Cranial nerves
Emerge from the bran - 12 pairs
Spinal nerves
Emerge from spinal cord - 31 pairs
Sensory receptor
Structure of the NS that monitors=ors changes in the external or internal environment (tough receptors in skin, photoreceptors in eyes)
SNS
Converts output from the CNS to skeletal muscles only (voluntary)
ANS
conveys output from the CNS to smooth muscles, cardiac muscles, & glands (involuntary)
Sensory function
Detect internal stimuli - increase in blood pressure or external - raindrop on arm - info then carried to the brain & spinal cord through cranial & spinal nerves
Integrative function
NS processes sensory info by analyzing it & making decisions
Motor function
Once info is integrated the NS may elect an appropriate motor response by activating effectors (muscles & glands) through cranial & spainl nerves
