Q

What is the cycle of deprivation in relation to Melcombe Regis? How did it start?

A

The cycle of deprivation in Melcombe Regis was triggered by the Navy base at Portland closing down. This huge loss of jobs meant that people either had to move away to get other jobs(counter-urbanisation). However, this meant the less well off people put into unemployment by this were left behind, struggling to get another job due to their unique/unapplicable skillsets. This led to obscelence of the environment & property, then lack of investment by local authorities. A combination of these factors meant that new industries and buisnesses were reluctant to be located to the area.
