Locale
This idea that this is a place where something happens or is set, or that has particular events associated with it.
Location
‘Where’ a place is, e.g. co-ordinates on a map
Perception of place
The way in which a place is viewed or regarded by different people. This can be influenced by media representation or personal experience of place.
Place
Location with meaning. A place can be meaningful to individuals in ways that are personal or subjective. Places can also be meaningful at a social or cultural level and these meanings may be shared by different groups of people.
Placemaking
The deliberate shaping of an environment to facilitate social interaction and improve a community’s quality of live.
Sense of place
Refers to the subjective and emotional attachment people have to place. They develop this through experience and knowledge of a particular area,
Glocalisation
The phenomenon in which multinational companies are increasingly having to adapt to the local marketplace.
Positionality
How factors such as gender, age, race, ethnicity, religion, politics, or socio-economic group influences perception of different places.
Experienced place
A place that you have spent time in
Clone town
A settlement where the high street is dominated by chain stores.
Homogenised places ?
Places where globalisation has caused local cultures have been eroded, causing them to look identical to each other. Often described as ‘placelessness’.
Media place
A place you read about or seen on film, but you have not physically spent time in.
Localism
An affection for or emotional ownership of a particular place.
Regionalism
Consciousness of, and loyalty to, a distinct region with a population that shares similarities.
Nationalism
Loyalty and devotion to a nation, which creates a sense of national consciousness.
