What is a location?
A location is the physical point of where a place is.

A place is a location which has different meanings to various people.
What are locales?
Locations in a place that are associated with everyday activities.
What is sense of place?
The subjective emotional attachment to a place which gives it meaning.
What is placelessness?
The idea that a place has lost its distinctiveness and uniqueness.
What is attachment?
A feeling binding one subject with another.
What are the 4 types of places?
1)Near places
2)Far places
3)Experienced places

What are near places?
Those which are close to us. Near places are subjective.
What are far places?
Those that are distant.
What are experienced places?
Places that we have actually visited.
What are media places?
Places we have not visited, but may have learned about through media representations.
What is Genius Loci?
Genius Loci is the spirit of a place. It suggests that every place has a unique spirit or atmosphere, based on everything for the location is made up of, now and in the past.
What is place character?
Plates character relates to the specific qualities, attributes or features of a location that make it unique.
What is an endogenous factor?
Factors based on local characteristics or perspective originating from inside a place.
What are 8 endogenous factors?
1)land use

What is an exogenous factor?
Factors based on characteristics or perspective originating from outside the place, commonly referred to as flows.
Exogenous factors are commonly referred to as the flows of:
1)People
2)Money and investment
3)Resources
4)Ideas
What is an insider perspective?
A viewpoint from an individual within a place/who lives there and has an experience of a place.
What is an outsiders perspective?
A viewpoint of someone who is not from the certain place/doesn’t live there/has little or no experience of that place.
What is gentrification?
The process of renovation and improvement of housing to suit a middle class audience, usually leading to higher house prices.
What is place meaning?
Refers to the sense of place and character that different people give to a place. It is how a place is represented by tourist organisations, governments, corporate bodies and community groups.
What is rebranding?
The process by which forces of change aim to adapt the place meaning of a location.
Why is rebranding of a place done?
To encourage tourism by promoting the endogenous and exogenous characteristics of a place, to overcome negative connotations.
In what 4 ways can rebranding be done.

What is social clustering?
Groups of people with similar background frequently living together.
What is segregation?
The separation of a group from other groups this can be through force or voluntarily.
What is perception?
A persons view of a place or issue based on feelings, experience and outside forces such as the media.
What is internal migration?
The movement of people within a country.
What is international migration?
The movement of people from one country to another.
What is ethnic clustering?
Residential areas with similar cultures, ethnicity or religions.
What is the built environment?
The buildings and infrastructure within an urban area.
What is an insider?
People who feel like they are part of a place, they feel included within a place and have a strong connection to it.
What is an outsider?
People who feel like they are not part of a place, they feel isolated and may not have a strong connection to the place.
What is topophillia?
The love of a place and having a strong attachment to it.
What is topophobia?
The dislike of a place.
