What’s the difference between location and locale
Location- where a place is
Locale- how people affect a place (culture/ demographics etc)
What does regionalism mean
Consciousness of, and loyalty to, a distinct region with a population that shares similarities
E.g. Cornwall
What does nationalism mean
Loyalty and devotion to a nation (e.g. patriotism, resurgence in welsh lang and culture highlighted stronger national identity among welsh)
What does localism mean
An affection for/ emotional ownership of a particular place (home town, nimbyism)
What is nimbyism
‘Not in my backyard’
People reluctant to leave local area affected by development (urbanism)
What does homogenised mean
Different places increasingly resemble those found in other areas
What is a clone town
Had its individuality of its high street replaced by a monochrome strip of global and national chains
What is a sense of place
Massey, 1991- not just geographic location but an amalgam of influence from social networks and relations. Subjective and emotional attachment people have to a place
Define placelessness
Condition of an environment lacking significant places and lacks attachment
Define lived experience
Person has spent time (lived) in a certain place and got first hand experience there- normally has better knowledge/ understanding of a place
