Cliff Profile
Height and angle if a cliff face as well as its features.
Coastal Accretion
Deposition of sediment at the coast and the seaward growth of the coast, creating new land.
Beach Morphology
Shape of a beach, width, slope, and features.
Dredging
Scooping sediment from the seabed. For construction or deepening channels.
Eustatic Change
Rise or fall in water level caused by a change in water volume.
Swash
The flow of water up a beach as a wave breaks.
Backwash
When water runs back down the beach to meet the next incoming wave.
Long shore drift
A process by which beach material is moved along the coast.
Hydraulic action
Erosion caused when water and air are forced into gaps in rocks or soil.
Retreat
The gradual backward movement of a land form due to the process of erosion.
Storm surge
Rise in sea level that can cause coastal flooding during a storm. Low pressure & strong winds.
Wave cut platform
Coastal platform made of rocky shelf in front of a cliff. Caused by erosion.
Fetch
Distance over water which wind blows, the distance waves have to grow in size.
Blow hole
When a coastal cave turns upwards and breaks through the flat cliff top.
Literal zone
Wider coastal zone, including adjacent land areas and shallow parts of the sea just offshore.
