Changes to the Atmosphere- Climate Change Flashcards
Which layer of the atmosphere does the greenhouse effect occur?
Describe the 3 stages of the natural greenhouse effect?
Troposphere.
- The sun’s energy gets into the atmosphere
- Water vapour and gases absorb, then absorb the sun’s energy
- Also, land and oceans absorb the sun’s energy - Earth is therefore heated
- (Additionally)
- Some Heat travels to space from earth
What are the 3 main greenhouse gases responsible for the greenhouse effect?
- Carbon dioxide
- Nitrous oxide
- Methane
Outline 3 human activities contributing to climate change?
- Generating power/manufacturing goods
- Burning fossil fuels for - Electricity
- Heat
- Energy
- Needed to make goods
- Increases global emissions - Cutting down forests
- When trees are cut they emit carbon
- It was stored in them
- Increases global emissions - Using transportation
- Run on fossil fuels
- Emit greenhouse gases - in particular carbon dioxide
- Increases global emissions
Compare the human induced greenhouse effect and the natural greenhouse effect.
Natural Greenhouse Effect:
1. Cannot be prevented
- Humans must realise this
- Must take action
2. Caused by the atmosphere trapping the sun’s heat
3. Needed for us to flourish
- Traps heat energy from the sun
Human Induced Greenhouse Effect:
1. Can be prevented
- Humans can use renewable resources
- Eat less beef
2. Caused by human activity
- Burning fossil fuels
- For energy
3. Unnecessary huge increase in global emissions
- This is not like heat coming from the sun that is needed for earth to be livable
Describe the 3 impacts of climate change.
- Increased drought
- More people will be deprived of water - Melting glaciers
- Rises sea levels even more
- Increase in destruction of the coasts (Coastal erosion)
- Increases chances of storms - Severe storms (could be a an impact of melting glaciers/rising sea levels)/forest fires
- Species are in danger
- Could die
Outline a way to stop the increase in carbon emissions
- Using renewable energy
- Emit barely/no greenhouse gases
- Reduction in the number of fossil fuels being burned
- When more people are using renewable energy
- Decrease in carbon emissions
Evaluate this way of stopping the increase in carbon emissions.
Evaluation - Partially effective
1. Positive (Firstly)
- Better than emitting carbon emissions into the atmosphere
- (Because) emits barely/no greenhouse gases
- (Additionally) - If everyone switches to using renewable energy
- Less carbon emissions are emitted
2. Negative (Secondly)
- Controversial opinions
- (Additionally) - Not everyone will agree
- Some may only care about themselves
- It may not affect them
