Q

Which layer of the atmosphere does the greenhouse effect occur?

Describe the 3 stages of the natural greenhouse effect?

A

Troposphere.

  1. The sun’s energy gets into the atmosphere
  2. Water vapour and gases absorb, then absorb the sun’s energy
    - Also, land and oceans absorb the sun’s energy
  3. Earth is therefore heated
  4. (Additionally)
    - Some Heat travels to space from earth

Q

Outline 3 human activities contributing to climate change?

A
  1. Generating power/manufacturing goods
    - Burning fossil fuels for
  2. Electricity
  3. Heat
  4. Energy
    - Needed to make goods
    - Increases global emissions
  5. Cutting down forests
    - When trees are cut they emit carbon
    - It was stored in them
    - Increases global emissions
  6. Using transportation
    - Run on fossil fuels
    - Emit greenhouse gases - in particular carbon dioxide
    - Increases global emissions

Q

Compare the human induced greenhouse effect and the natural greenhouse effect.

A

Natural Greenhouse Effect:
1. Cannot be prevented
- Humans must realise this
- Must take action
2. Caused by the atmosphere trapping the sun’s heat
3. Needed for us to flourish
- Traps heat energy from the sun

Human Induced Greenhouse Effect:
1. Can be prevented
- Humans can use renewable resources
- Eat less beef
2. Caused by human activity
- Burning fossil fuels
- For energy
3. Unnecessary huge increase in global emissions
- This is not like heat coming from the sun that is needed for earth to be livable

Q

Describe the 3 impacts of climate change.

A
  1. Increased drought
    - More people will be deprived of water
  2. Melting glaciers
    - Rises sea levels even more
    - Increase in destruction of the coasts (Coastal erosion)
    - Increases chances of storms
  3. Severe storms (could be a an impact of melting glaciers/rising sea levels)/forest fires
    - Species are in danger
    - Could die

Q

Outline a way to stop the increase in carbon emissions

A
  1. Using renewable energy
    - Emit barely/no greenhouse gases
    - Reduction in the number of fossil fuels being burned
    - When more people are using renewable energy
    - Decrease in carbon emissions

Q

Evaluate this way of stopping the increase in carbon emissions.

A

Evaluation - Partially effective
1. Positive (Firstly)
- Better than emitting carbon emissions into the atmosphere
- (Because) emits barely/no greenhouse gases
- (Additionally) - If everyone switches to using renewable energy
- Less carbon emissions are emitted
2. Negative (Secondly)
- Controversial opinions
- (Additionally) - Not everyone will agree
- Some may only care about themselves
- It may not affect them
