Q

Explain migration post ww2

A
  • By 1970, only 53% of black Americans lived in southern states. However after ww2, many began to migrate back due to 3 reasons:
    A) return reasons (where born)
    B) south and south east known as the sun belt offered more job opportunities
    C) north known as the rust belt. Heavy industry began to decline. E.g Detroit jobs cut by 50% in the years post ww2

  • Harlem Renaissance was key: distinct music etc formed
However, wasn’t entirely a good development. Post ww2 economically dropped 1990 study found a 15 year old girl had same living expectation as a 15 year old girl in India
17
Q

Changing pattern of settlement and segregation

A
  • wherever black migrants went they faced discrimination in 1917 summer there were 26 race riots. Chicago was the worst.
  • Eugene Willian’s (17) went into white only beach and was attacked and drowned.
  • Riots lasted 5 days 1000 black families displaced

Changing pattern of settlement and segregation

Tulsa race riot

A

Many whites surrounded police station to lynch him. And people from greenwood came to protect him resulting in whites destroying greenwood and predominantly black areas.

A

Caused by introduction of legal segregation in old south accompanied with increased violence caused by deterioration of blac civil rights progress

20
Q

Changing pattern of settlement and segregation

The watts riot in LA 1965

A

Very different from Chicago and Tulsa as blacks were making genuine progress in civil rights (1964 civil rights act) however inner city didn’t change at all from this progress and tension grew from 1964-68 started in Chicago due to arrest of black motorist who was allegedly drink drivin. The riot lasted 6 days and $40 million worth of damage was done national guard had to intervene.

21

The 50s were a period of growth, but the gap rose during this period.

  • By 1960s on average white families earned double black families
  • the federal housing association as supported white only areas.(levitt estates) North western cities developed 2 societies, non white inner city and white suburbia. The black people were stuck in ghettos
  • from 50-60 18 million pp ml moved to suburbia made tension
22
Q

Changing pattern of settlement and segregation

Newark riot

A

1967: blamed on hot weather. Newark area where houses were segregated. Main causes were money going into skl and the education system which should have gone to housing
Arrest of taxi driver sparked riot. Eventually national guard were deployed

23
Q

Changing pattern of settlement and segregation

Explain desegregation of the old south post 1970

A

-50s and 60s saw progress. 1954 landmark: brown vs Topeka which led to Supreme Court saying segregation is against constitution
1969+71: Alexander vs Holmes county school board. Supreme Court demanded racial integration.
In 1968, 68% of blacks attended segregated skl by 1974 only 8% did
However just because legal segregation ended did not mean black people moved to segregated areas.
