A
-he is hostile to ask questions and remains quite awkward ’suddenly guffaws’ (makes audience suspicious of him) but towards the end, he states whatever is on his mind

- audience is suspicious of him from this and the drinking could possibly suggest the darker side of the family

- presented as a villain (at first) and towards the end as a victim
- VILLAIN- feels isolated and unsupported and Mr Birling seems to have a better relationship with Gerald than him
- VICTIM- ‘you don’t understand. You never did’, he deeply regrets his actions and won’t forget what he’s learnt
