  • presented as a villain (at first) and towards the end as a victim
  • VILLAIN- feels isolated and unsupported and Mr Birling seems to have a better relationship with Gerald than him
  • VICTIM- ‘you don’t understand. You never did’, he deeply regrets his actions and won’t forget what he’s learnt
