6
Q

describe the conclusions?

A

1) Improved adherence combined with satisfactory delivery characteristics.
2) the use of the funhaler could possibly be translated to improved measures of clinical outcome.
2) May improve health of children
3) more research is recommended in the long term for the treatment.

7
Q

Describe the comparison part of the procedure.

A

A comparison was made between the aerosol output of the standard spacer device and the funhaler.
There was no difference therefore the drug delivery was the same.

8
Q

Describe the initial approach of the procedure.

A

Participants were approached by the researcher at home initially before the funhaler was mentioned and interviewed with a questionnaire on their existing inhaler.

9
Q

Describe the main procedure.

A

Children were given the funhaler for 2 weeks and reported over the phone on a regular basic to take snapshots of whether they had used the funhaler the previous day.
After sequential use of the breath a tech and funhaler they were visited again by the researcher and parents were interviewed and completed the matched questionnaires.

10
Q

Describe the findings.

A

1) The use of the funhaler was associated with improved parental and child compliance
2) 38% more parents were found to have medicated their children the previous day when using the funhaler compared to their existing spacer device.
3) 60% more children took the recommended 4 or more cycles per aerosol delivery when using the funhaler compared with the spacer device.
4) Significantly more parents reported they were ‘always’ successful in medicating their child using the funhaler compared to their existing device.

Q

What was the aim of this study?

14
Q

Assess the ethical issues.

A

Although the participants were not told about the funhaler at the start of the experiment, nonetheless it can be assumed that all ethical guidelines were adhered to.

15
Q

Assess the ecological validity.

A

Natural setting of the research means ecological validity is high.
However it’s not everyday that children and parents must complete a questionnaire or complete an interview.

16
Q

Discuss the reliability of the study.

A

Things the aided replicability was:
Questionnaire being the same
Length of time using funhaler was the same
Same funhaler

However, only 32 participants so raises the question of whether the sample was large enough to establish a consistent effect.

17
Q

Discuss the ethnocentrism.

A

The sample were all from Australia which makes the ethnocentrism as it is not obvious toys built into the design of the funhaler would appeal to all cultures.

18
Q

How does the study link to the developmental area?

A

Illustrates a way in which children learn and how parents can help their children to acquire desired behaviours.

19
Q

What is operant conditioning?

A

Behaviourist theory devised by skinner to explain how behaviour is learned as a result of consequences.

20
Q

How does the study link to operant conditioning?

A

Something pleasant happens after the behaviour ( a spinner goes round or whistle blowing ) as a consequence therefore behaviour is likely to be repeated.
