Chaney -2004 Flashcards
Define operant conditioning
A theory of learning where behaviours is influenced by its consequences. Behaviours that are reinforced (rewarded) will likely repeated
Define a health psychologist
The study of psychological and behavioural processes in health, illness and healthcare
Define positive reinforcement
The process of encouraging or establish a pattern of behaviour by offering reward when the behaviour is exhibited
What is a funhaler?
Incorporates features to distract the attention of children from the drug delivery event itself to provide a means of reinforcing the use of
Define compliance
When an individual changes the behaviour in response to an explicit or implicit request by another person
What is asthma spacer device?
A device that makes using an in phaser efficient and more effective
What is the background behind chaney study?
•Poor adherence to asthma medication is a huge problem globally
•Research has suggested that there is a clear link between frequency of asthma attacks and compliance: children who experience asthma attacks have an average compliance rate of 14% whereas those who do not experience attacks have 68% compliance rate
•Treatment programmes may lack efficacy because the condition is not managed early on and/or patients do not receive regular reviews
What is positive reinforcement?
To add something to the environment that would increase the likelihood of the behaviour to reoccur eg Rats given food when they pressed the right lever
What is negative reinforcement?
take away something from the environment To increase likelihood of behaviour reoccurring eg Electrification of the floor removed when they pressed the lever
What is positive punishment?
To add something to the environment to decrease the likelihood of behaviour reoccurring eg Rats given electric shock when the pressed the wrong lever
What is negative punishment?
To take away something from the environment that decrease the likelihood of behaviour reoccurring eg Food bowl removed when they pressed the wrong lever
