she was placed in an orphanage at the age of 12 by her father, after the death of her mother. there she was raised by nuns who taught her how to sew.

one day, she created a dress out of an old jersey. many people asked where she got it, and she offered to make them one. additionally, she had a love for horses, and thus designed clothing that suited outdoorsy women and was as comfortable as men’s clothing
the significance of the jersey material
this jersey material was often worn by members of the lower class, but just as chanel herself had an incredibly poor upbringing, she brought herself and the jersey to the upper classes

she designed the look in 1925. the collarless jacket and well-fitted skirt was relatively revolutionary at the time due to elements of masculinity and menswear
the color black
chanel brought black into the daily wardrobe. previously, it was only worn in mourning.

she brought modernity to the fashion world, and favored functionality over flamboyance.
