Chamberí Flashcards
Calle Fortuny
This street is located in quite a privileged, “aristocratic” area (– the Almagro neighborhood of Madrid’s traditional Chamberí district and it’s named after Mariano Fortuny (Reus, 1838- Rome 1874) who is considered the second most famous Spanish painter of the 19th century after the great Francisco de Goya. Many of the private mansions in this area became home to key historic institutions such as the first headquarters of the Residencia de estudiantes or Students’ Residence, which was created to provide accommodation for students along the lines of classic colleges such as Bologna, Salamanca, Cambridge or Oxford. Between 1910 and 1936, it fostered some of Spain’s brightest young thinkers, writers, and artists like painter Salvador Dalí, filmmaker Luis Buñuel and poet and playwright Federico García Lorca. Distinguished guests and speakers there included Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, Juan Ramón Jiménez or Rafael Alberti.
