Why was the Weimar Republic unpopular?
The politicians who ran the republic were the same ones who surrendered at the end of the first world war, therefore the republic was always linked with surrender and harsh peace treaty terms

What was the armistice?
An agreement to stop fighting
When was the Treaty of Versailles signed?
28th June 1919
Why did the signing of the ToV make the Weimar Republic unpopular?
Peace was unpopular with the German people, as they had suffered during the war and the terms of the treaty were very unpopular amongst the German people
The German people saw the ToV as a ‘diktat’, what does this mean?
Dictated peace (forced), the terms of the treaty were imposed, not agreed
What did Article 231 state?
Germany had started the war and had to pay reparations to the victorious nations
How much money did Germany have to pay to the Allies?
136,000 marks or £6.6 million
Germany’s military strength was cut, what were they limited to?
The army was limited to 100,000 men with no heavy artillery
The navy was limited to six battleships, six cruisers, 12 destroyers and 12 torpedo boats, no submarines were allowed
No air force was allowed
