climate
this is the weather conditions over a period of time. There are two main weather conditions in the Caribbean:
♡Rainy season – heavy rainfall, high
humidity, strong winds, floods
damage crops and livestock,
increase in pests and diseases,
hurricanes
♡Dry season – high temperatures, lack
of water for plant use, thus expensive
irrigation systems needed, low crop
production
topography (physical shape or slop of the land)
♡Flat lands prone to flooding
♡Mountainous lands- difficult and
expensive to mechanise, prone to
soil erosion, landslides
♡Expensive land management – e.g.
terracing, contouring
infrastructure
refers to the basic services and instillation needed for a community to function ( transportation, roads, canals, dams) communication systems, water and power, public institutions such as school
lack of rural infrastructure results in
rural-urban drift
abandonment of agricultural land
shortage of labour
lack of extension services
not enough people officers to pass information and training. in addition, training centres are not always equipped to provide the training and practical demonstrations needed to convince farmers of the benefit of new practices
praedial Larceny
this is the stealing of agricultural prduce. this results in economic losses to farmers. it also discouraged them from farming and abandoning land
land tenure system
this refers to the condition where people own land. some may not choose to do farming and also choose to pass down land to their children generation after generation, which results in large pieces of land being divided into small parcels shared among many individuals. these small lands aren’t suitable for economic agricultural activities.
loss of agricultural land
good agricultural land such as flat land are used for other purposes such as housing rather than agriculture
lack of sustainable agriculture
