Ch.8: Single Subject Design Flashcards
Single Subject Design (SSD)
a research approach that involves examining change in individual people over multiple time points or observations
Basic Components of SSD
-A participant (N=1)
-A dependent variable that can be observed and measured
-more than 3 points of observation before and after intervention
-IV/an intervention or treatment that serves as the independent variable (dashed lines on the graph)
SSD Visual considerations/clues
-level: inspect the actual data points
-trend: pattern of slope line(increasing or decreasing)
-variability: movement in the line (stable or flucuating)
SSD Assumptions
- any changes observed is “clinically” meaningful
-observe client progress & evaluate practice - there is nothing else that could have caused changes shown in the graph
Common SSDs
B, AB, ABAB, ABCD
A= baseline
B,C,D,E= intervention
Threats to Internal Validity
carry-over effects & self-monitoring
Carry-over Effects
the effects of previous intervention persist during the implementation of another intervention
Self-monitoring
Paying attention to a behavior causes it to change
