Ch7 - Vestibular Flashcards
Vestibular system
Vestibular sac (orientation), Semicircular canals (movement)
Vestibular sacs
utricle (little pouch) & saccule (little sack)
Cilia of hair cells of receptive tissue of organs are embedded in gelatinous mass which contains otoconia (calcium carbonate crystals that shift gelatinous mass with gravity)
Semicircular canals
Endolymph - fluid membranous canal floating within a bony one
Receptive organs: cupula (section of ampulla (before cochlea)) contains hair cells activated by push-pull mechanisms & go to axons of ampullary nerve
Vesibular pathway
Vestibular nerves - ganglion
most axons of vestibular nerve synapse within vestibular nuclei in the medulla
Some axons travel directly to cerebellum
Responsible for dizziness
