ch7 skeletal system Flashcards
bones stores vital substances such as
calcium & fat
hormones regulate calcium storages
calcium
increase storage
calcitonin
reduces stores of calcium
parathyroid hormones
process of cell formation
hematopoiesis
soft connective tissue inside the hard walls of bones that produces both red and white blood cells
red bone marrow
4 major classifications of bone structure
- long bone- ex: humerus
- short bone- ex: carpals
- flat bone- ex: frontal
- irregular bone - ex: vertebrate
round bone develope within a tendon ex: patellar
sesamoid
hollow tube made of hard compact bone; hence ridge / strong structure but light enough to cause movement
diaphysis
hollow area inside the diaphysis that contains soft yellow bone marrow( fat)
medullary cavity
spongy bone of the end of the bone filled with red bone marrow
epiphysis
thin layers of cartilage covering each epiphysis
- functions like a rubber cushion
articular cartilage
a strong membrane of dense fibrous tissue that covers the bone except the articular cartilage
periosteum
membrane that lines the medullary cavity
endosteum
