Q

power and status

A

A person is said to have power over another if there is a reasonable expectation that the second person will behave in the way the first person desires, even against the person’s own wishes.
For example, a motor mechanic has power over a customer with little mechanical knowledge.
However, the employer has power over the mechanic, who may need this job to feed and house their family.
Status refers to position or rank in relation to others within a group, or of a group within society.

Q

roles

A

Status and power within a group are often linked to the role each individual has in the group.
A role is the behaviour adopted by an individual or assigned to them that influences the way in which they function or act in different group situations (and life in general).
A role also carries with it expectations of how to behave when in the group or on behalf of the group.
A role expectation is therefore the behaviour that others expect of you, because of the role that you have.
