Ch6 Masts/Flight Controls Flashcards
How can a mast support the weight of a Helicopter?
Through bearings attached to the outside surface of the transmission
Need at least 30 Qs
Need 30 questions
How do you check if a servo valve is still functioning normally if suspected of malfunction?
Disconnect and extend and retract the piston on servo by hand
What does it mean when told to align tube?
Check answer: Ensure it has slight movement and does not bind
What forces must the (rotating) mast withstand? The stationary?
- Rotating = it absorbs tension and torsion loads
- Stationary= tension
How many spline sections are on a bell 47 mast? What are they?
5
- main rotor head (yoke)
- stabilizer bar
- dampener bracket
- drag link
- transmission
What are the 3 inspections that may be carried out on a mast at overhaul?
Visible, dimensional, magna-fluxed (NDT) and may require a run-out check for concentricity
Describe the stabilizer bar operation/purpose
Stabilizer bar uses gyroscopic rigidity and dampeners control speed
What will happen if a stabilizer bar dampener becomes seized?
Too hard= an unstable helicopter with too quick a control response
How do we increase friction on a bell 206 swashplate?
Remove the shims from inner ring of bearing cap (ensure done evenly)
How do we prevent corrosion inside push-pull tubes?
- sealed with PROSEAL or METAL SET on the adjustable ends
- clean out inside of tube and pure in primer, then drain excess, let dry then install (then seal if called for)
Describe the operation of an irreversible valve
-locks fluid in servo valve when hydraulic system loses pressure
Do we level a bell 206 to carry out flight control rigging?
No, don’t have to
What does AFCS stand for?
Automatic Flight Control System
What are some switches found on a collective?
- beep switch
- governor trim
- landing lights
- idle release
