Ch.4 - Recognizing Opacified Hemithorax Flashcards
Atelectasis in older people?
Bronchogenic carcinoma.
Atelectasis in critically ill people?
Mucous plugs.
Atelectasis in young people?
Asthma or foreign body.
Important point in atelectasis?
The visceral + parietal pneumothorax NEVER separate from each other.
–> UNLIKE pneumothorax.
Why are the MOBILE structures in the thorax “pulled” toward the side of the atelectasis?
Because the visceral and the parietal pleural do NOT separate from each other.
The most VISIBLE MOBILE structures in the thorax are?
- Heart.
- Trachea.
- Hemidiaphragms.
Cancer with a perfect balance …?
At times, there may be a perfect BALANCE between the PUSH of a malignant effusion and the PULL of underlying obstructive atelectasis from the malignancy itself.
To perform a pneumonectomy?
Either the 5th or 6th rib on the affected side is almost always removed.
By about … after surgery, the pneumonectomized hemithorax should be completely opaque.
4 months.
After pneumonectomy, the mobile structures gradually shift?
TOWARDS the side of the opacification.
3+1 causes of opacified hemithorax?
- Atelectasis of the entire lung.
- A very large pleural effusion.
- Pneumonia of an entire lung.
- Pneumonectomy.
