Memphis
The capital of Old Kingdom Egypt, near the head of the Nile Delta. It is most famous for the royal pyramids
Command Economy
an economic system in which the government controls the means of production, such as land, labor, and machinery
Hatsheput
First female pharaoh who expanded Egypt through trade
Papyrus
The Egyptians grew this grass-like reed to make many materials, such as sails for boats, cloth, mats, cords, and a paper-like material for writing.
Intermediary period
a period of Egyptian history where the dynasties were weak; these are generally considered periods of decline for the ancient Egyptians.
Thebes
a city in ancient Egypt, 419 miles south of Cairo. It was the capital in Egypt’s period of greatest splendor.
Tutankhamun
The Egyptian pharaoh commonly called King Tut. He was the youngest pharaoh, 10 years of age, and ruled for 9 years. He died at the age of 19.
Valley of Kings
the burial site of nearly all the kings, or pharaohs, of the 18th, 19th, and 20th Egyptian dynasties
Kush
an ancient Nubian kingdom whose rulers controlled Egypt between 2000 and 1000 B.C.
Cleopatra VII
An Egyptian queen, was the last of Egypt’s Macedonian dynasty. She ruled at a time of tremendous change in Rome.
Menes
the first king, or pharaoh, of Egypt
Ramses II
One of the longest ruling pharaohs of ancient Egypt. For a little over 66 years he defended and expanded Egyptian power, presiding over a prosperous kingdom.
Glyph
a written or carved character or figure that stands for something else
Cubit
a unit of measurement of length that is believed to have been developed by ancient Egyptians in about 3000 BCE
Deity
Another word for a god
