Ch4 Cinematography Flashcards
What is apparent motion?
The psychological process that explains our perception of movement when watching films, in which the brain actively responds to the visual stimuli of a rapid sequence of still images exactly as it would in actual motion perception
What is a magic lantern?
A device developed in the 17th century using a lens and a light sourceto project an image from a painted glass slide
Which invention enabled moving pictures to be projected for the first time?
Muybridge’s zoopraxiscope (a rotating glass disk), 1879
When is the official birthdate of movies?
December 28,1895 when the Lumière brothers debuted their Cinématographe
What is film stock?
A length of unexposed film consisting of a flexible backing or base and a light-sensitive emulsion
What is film gauge?
The width of the film stock
What became the standard film stock for black and white movies after 1926?
Panchromatic Stock
How had color processes evolved by the 1930s?
individually hand-painted frames —> colored stocks —> Technicolor
Which movie was the first to use 3-strip Technicolor?
Disney’s Flowers and Trees (1932)
What is focal length?
The distance from the center of the lens to the point where light rays meet in sharp focus.
What is depth of field?
The range or distance before and behind the main focus of a shot within which objects remain relatively sharp and clear.
What are the benefits to using a wide-angle lens?
Its short focal length allows for a depth of field that shows foreground and background in focus simultaneously
When did movies go from squares to rectangles?
In the early 1950s when several widescreen process that widened aspect ratio were introduced
What were some of the tools used by cinematographers to distort images in the 1960s?
Filters, flares, a telephoto lens, and zooming
Describe a telephoto lens
A lens that has a focal length of at least 75mm and is capable of magnifying and flattening distant objects
What are the benefits of digital compared to film?
No lab processing, no physical editing, no printing effects = lower costs and more efficient. Allows for longer takes.
