Ch4&5: Chemical Bonding, Structures & Properties Flashcards

1
Q

Structure of diamond and explain why diamond is very hard.

A

Diamond has a giant molecular structure with many strong covalent bond between the carbon atom throughout its structure. Hence, it is difficult to break these strong bonds as a lot of heat is absorbed to break these bonds.

Q

Structure of graphite, and explain why graphite acts as a lubricant.

A

Giant molecular structure with layers of carbon atoms held together by weak intermolecular forces of attraction. The weak forces are easily overcome when a force is applied and allows the layers of atoms to Slide Over each other. This it is slippery and can be used as a lubricant.

Q

Similarities and differences between the bonding and structures in diamond and graphite.

A

They both have a giant molecular structure as they have strong covalent bonds between the carbon atoms throughout its structure. In diamond, each carbon atom is bonded tetrahedrally to four other carbon atoms by strong covalent bonds. In graphite, each carbon atom is bonded to other carbon atoms by strong covalent bonds forming layers of hexagonal rings.
