Non nationalist vs. Nationalist loyalties
Non-nationalist:
Loyalties that aren’t tied to an idea of a nation ex. You share an inside joke with friends
nationalist:
Loyalties tied to an idea of a nation, ex. you and another person share a common language and become friends because of it
NN-Class loyalty
Loyalty to people from a particular sector
Ex. Working people, business entrepreneurs
NN-Religious loyalty
Loyalty to a religious organization and it’s beliefs and values
Ex. Catholic Church, Tibetan, Buddhism
NN-Regional loyalty
Loyalty to a region and the interest of people living there
Ex. The west, the arctic
NN-Ideological loyalty
Loyalty to shared ideas about how a society should work
Ex. Conservatism, Marxism, animal rights
NN-Cultural loyalty
Loyalty to a way of life
Ex. Alberta ranchers, Ukrainian heritage, Siksika heritage
Racial or ethnic Loyalty
loyalty to people of the same racial or ethnic background
Ex. Tutsis, Koreans
How do NN and N compete
When N and NN loyalties lead people towards different goals. Wealth, status, education level, career choice, ancestry play a role in divisions in society if they accept this there is no conflict if it is not accepted and one class is favoured then conflict occurs

Religious loyalties have conflict in Iraq
Two main groups, shiites sunnis disagree on the interpretation of the Qur’an (Muslim scripture), and lead to a conflict.
Conflict revolves around the idea of how their religion should play a role in the country’s politics and justice system.
