What are some of the components of outpatient treatment?
- often utilize both individual and group therapy formats
- most outpatient programs follow a 12-step format
- formal treatment plan established at the beginning of treatment, with review sessions, where appropriate mutual goals are made
- Pyscho-educational lectures and bibliotherapy used to help patient understand the consequences of their SUD
- “family night” - family can come and ask question and express concerns about the clients progress
- abstinence from the substance is required for participation
What is a requirement for the patient to participate in outpatient treatment?
abstinence
What are some disadvantages of outpatient treatment?
-High dropout rates. Many who are initially referred to an outpatient program might be referred to an inpatient treatment program if their recovery status indicates inpatient treatment might be more beneficial.
-Likely to relapse greater if this does not work
-Does not offer the same degree of structure as an inpatient setting
-Family may be enabling when in the home environment
-Continued exposure to drug use triggers in everyday environment

What is therapeutic community?
- concept that originated in the 1960’s as a self-help alternative to traditional treatment programs for drug addiciton
- Core Concept = The SUDs reflect deviant behavior that indicate an immature personality
- Current Therapeutic Communities pre-screen clients to exclude history of suicide attempts, homicide, and uncontrolled psychiatric disorders.
Describe an appropriate patient for a halfway placement?
a client that lacks a stable support system in their normal lives would be a good candidate for a halfway house.
What is included in a treatment plan?
-review sessions and appropriate goals, being scheduled on a regular basis to monitor the clients progress toward the mutually agreed-upon goals.
Is there a standard definition of residential substance abuse treatment?

What is supportive confrontation?
helping another in treatment by confronting them to confront their problems. in the end, the only thing that can compel another to change is their own decision to change
What is the drop-out rate for a therapeutic community?
30-40%
Why does a patient need an “aftercare” program?
-such programs have shown to significantly contribute to client abstinence rates
