CH3 - structure of nervous system Flashcards
meninges
Dura mater - subdural space - arachnoid membrane - subarachnoid space (filled w CSF) - arachnoid trabeculae - pia mater (blood vessels) - surface of brain
Choroid plexus
Specialized tissue in ventricles that secretes CSF (CSF circulates through ventricles then gets absorbed in subarachnoid space)
Forebrain
Lateral ventricle –> telencephalon (cerebral cortex, basal ganglia, limbic system)
Third –> diencephalon (thalamus & hypothalamus)
Midbrain & hindbrain
Cerebral aqueduct - mesencephalon (tectum & tegmentum)
Fourth - metencephalon (cerebellum & pons) & myelencephalon (medulla oblongata)
Cingulate gyrus
limbic cortex in diencephalon, bug hypothalmic structure
limbic system & basal ganglia
Located around media edge of cerebral hemispheres
group of subcortical nuclei in forebrain - control of movement
diencephalon
thalamus - projects info
hypothalamus - controls ANS & endocrine system, behaviors related to survival
Mesensephalon
Tectum “roof” - dorsal portion of mesencephalon, superior & inferior colliculi
Tegmentum “covering” - beneath tectum,
periaqueductal gray matter substantia nigra reticular formation (controls eye movements) red nucleus ventral tegmental area
metencephalon
Cerebellum:
- Receives visual, auditory, vestibular & somatosensory info & info about individual muscle movements
- Modifies motor outflow - smoothing
Pons - relays info from cerebral cortex to cerebellum
Medulla oblongata
regulation of cardiovascular system, respiration, skeletal muscle tone
Spinal cord
distributes motor fibers,
collects somatosensory info,
contains some reflex circuits,
composed of vertebral column w 24 individual vertebrae, fused vertebrae & spinal roots
Surrounded grey matter then white matter
PNS
Cranial nerves & spinal nerves
cranial nerves
12 pairs attached to ventral surface of brain
Vagus nerve (10) regulates functions of organs inthoracic & abdominal cavities
oflactory bulbs (1) –> ofla info
Spinal nerves
afferent axons bring info toward CNS
ANS
Sympathetic - thoracic & lumbar
parasympathetic - cranial & sacral (bottom end)
