Ch3 Elctromagnetic Waves Vocac for Science Flashcards
electromagnetic spectrum
the complete range of electromagnetic waves placed in order of increasing frequency. Is made up of radio waves, microwaves, infrared rays, visible light, ultraviolet rays, X-rays, and gamma rays.
Electromagnetic wave
A transverse wave that involves the transfer of electric and magnetic energy. A transverse wave that is made up of vibrating electric and magnetic field that move through space or the medium at the speed of light.
radio waves
electromagnetic waves with the longest wavelengths and
lowest frequencies.
microwaves:
electromagnetic waves that have shorter wavelengths
and higher frequencies than radio waves.
radar:
a system that uses reflected radio waves to detect objects and
measure their distance and speed.
infrared rays
electromagnetic waves with shorter wavelengths and
higher frequencies than microwaves. Carry more energy than
microwaves, and are often called heat rays.
thermogram:
an image that shows regions of different temperatures in
different colors.
visible light
electromagnetic waves that you can see.
ultraviolet rays
electromagnetic waves with shorter wavelengths and higher frequencies than those of visible light. Carry more energy than visible light and can damage or kill living cells
X-rays
electromagnetic waves with shorter wavelengths and higher frequencies than ultraviolet rays. Carry more energy than ultraviolet rays and can penetrate most matter.
gamma rays
electromagnetic waves with the shortest wavelengths and highest frequencies. Have the greatest amount of energy and are the most penetrating.
