A complex process of sending, receiving, and comprehending messages between 2 or more people
Communication
Communication that occurs within an individual; “self talk”
IntRApersonal communication
Communication that occurs between 2 or more people in a small group
IntERpersonal communication
Communication that occurs within large groups of people
Public communication
Ex: Educational endeavors where the nurse is teaching a large group of individuals
Communication that addresses an individual’s spiritual needs and provides interventions to meet those needs
Transpersonal communication
Words that are used to communicate either a written or a spoken message
Vocabulary
When communicating, participants must share meanings
EX: Words that have multiple meanings may cause miscommunication if they are interpreted differently
Denotative/connotative meaning
The shortest, simplest communication is usually most effective
EX: Long and complex communication may be difficult to understand
Clarity/brevity
Knowing when to communicate allows the receiver to be more attentive to the message
Timing/relevance
The rate of speech can communicate a meaning to the receiver
EX. Speaking rapidly may imply to the patient that the nurse is rushed
Pacing
The tone of voice can communicate a variety of feelings
EX: The nurse can communicate feelings, such as acceptance, judgement, and dislike through tone of voic
Intonation
The purposeful use of communication to build and maintain helping relationships with clients, families, and significant others
Therapeutic communication
What age groups require altered techniques to enhance communication?
Children and older adults

- Client centered (not social or reciprocal)

How do we communicate with children (4)?
- Simple, straightforward language
- Be aware of our OWN nonverbal messages–children are sensitive to these
- Be at childs level
- Incorporate PLAY
How do we communicate with older adults (4)?
- The client may require AMPLIFICATION
- Minimize distractions and face the client when speaking
- ALLOW PLENTY OF TIME FOR THE CLIENT TO RESPOND
- If there is impaired communication with the client, ask the family/caregivers what the best way to communicate is
