What’s a colony?
A region claimed and governed by another country.
What did the British want?
The British wanted land so they could farm and sell crops.
What did the French want?
The French wanted resources such as beaver fur so they could sell beaver hats.
How did the British treat the First Nations?
The British thought the First Nations were obstacles because they were in their way of getting land.
How did the French treat the First Nations?
The French had a positive relationship with the First Nations because they needed them as trade partners.
What kind of decease affected the First Nations?
Small pox killed off many First Nations.
What religion affected the First Nations?
Many First Nations were forced to convert to Catholicism or else they could not trade.
What kind of war affected the First Nations?
Many First Nations died because of war since they allied with the European Nations.
What were the Habitants?
They were farmers and worked for the seigneurs.
What were the Seigneurs?
They were land owners who employed Habitants to work on their land.
What were the Sovereign Council?
Made up of the Governor, Intendant and Bishop. They were in charge of defense, law and order, and meeting basic needs of colonists.
What were the Catholic Church?
They set up Churches, Hospitals and orphanages. They also provided Spiritual guidance.
What were the Merchants?
They were made up of bakers, shoemakers, blacksmiths and masons.
Who were the Coureurs de Bois and what did they do?
They were runners of the wood who were illegal fur traders. They sold furs to both French and British colonies.
What did European countries aim to achieve through colonies?
They hoped to gain more riches and power through their colonies.
