Strategic Arms Limitation Talk
1972 talks between President Nixon and Secretary Brezhen resulted in the Strategic Arms Limitations Treaty (or SALT), which limited the number of nuclear warheads each nation could possess, and prohibited the development of missile defense systems.
detente
A period of improving relations between the US and communist nations, particularly China and the USSR during the Nixon presidency.
My Lai Massacre
Massacre of 347 Vietnamese civilians in the village of My Lai by Lieutenant William Calley and troops under his command. US army officers covered up the massacre for a year until an investigation uncovered the events. Eventually, 25 army officers were charged with complicity in the massacre and its cover-up, but only Calley was convicted. He served little time for his crimes.
Pentagon Papers
Informal name for the defense department secret history of the Vietnam war; leaked to the press by former official Daniel Ellsberg and published in the NY Times in 1971
War Powers Act
Law passed in 1973 in response to the growing opposition to the Vietnam war, required congressional approval before the US sends troops abroad.
Vietnam Syndrome
The belief that the US should be extremely cautious when deploying its military forces overseas, this mentality emerged after the Vietnam war
Watergate
A Washington apartment and office complex that lent its name to the 1972-74 nixon administration scandal, when Nixons knowledge of the break-in and cover up were revealed, he resigned under threat of impeachment
Oil Embargo
Prohibition of trade of oil declared by the Organization of Pertroleum exporting countries (OPEC), dominated my middle eastern producers, in 1973 in response to the US and European support of Israel during the Yom Kippur war (‘73). The rise in gas prices and in fuel shortages caused a global recession and greatly impacted the US economy.
Stagflation
A combination of stagnant economic growth and high inflation during the 1970’s.
Deindustrialization
A term describing the decline of manufacturing in old old industrial areas in the 20th century as companies shifted manufacturing to low-wage centers in the South or West, or in other countries.
Sunbelt
A label for an arc that stretched between the Carolinas and California, much of the urban population growth occured in this area during the postwar era
Helsinki Accords
A 1975 agreement between the USSR and the US that stated that the countries would respect the postwar boundries set and guaranteed basic liberties for their citizens
Deregulation
Legislation during the Regan-Clinton era the removed many regulations in industries such as air travel and finance
Three Mile Island
Nuclear power plant near Harrisburg PA, home of the 1979 accident that released Nuclear stem into the air. Publics reaction ended the expansion of the Nuclear Power Industry as a whole.
Camp David Accords
Peace Agreements between the leaders of Israel and Egypt in 1978 brokered by President Jimmy Carter
Neoconservatives
The leaders of the conservative insurgency of the 1980s. Their brand of conservativism was personified by Reagan, with bleiefs in less government, supply side economics and “Family Values”.
Reagan Revolution
The rightward turn in politics following the 1980 election of Reagan. The Reagan Revolution made individual “freedom” a rallying call for the right.
Reaganomics
“Supply Side” economics, popular with Reagan, combined tax cuts with an unregulated marketplace.
Iran-Contra Affair
Scandal of the second Reagan administration involving the sale of arms to Iran for the partial release of hostages in Lebannon and the use of the arms money to aid the Contras in Nicaragua, which had been expressively forbidden by congress.
New World Order
President H. W Bush’s term for a post cold war world
