Ch22 The Nucleur Atom Flashcards
Define ionization:
When a particle (molecule or atom) becomes electrically charged by losing/gaining electrons
Define plum pudding model:
A disprove model of the atom which imaged it to consist of a positive “pudding” with electrons dotted through it
Define alpha particle (α-particle):
A particle made up of two protons and two neutrons;
it is emitted by an atomic nucleus during radioactive decay
Define nucleus:
A small, dense, positively charged region at the center of an atom
Define proton:
The positively charged particle found in the atomic nucleus
Define neutron:
An uncharged particle found in the atomic nucleus
Define nucleon:
A particle found in the atomic nucleus; a proton or a neutron
Define relative charge:
The charge of a particle relative to the charge of a proton
Define relative mass:
The mass of a particle relative to the mass of a proton
Define proton number (Z) / atomic number:
The number of protons in an atomic nucleus
Define nucleon number (A) / mass number:
The number of nucleons (protons, and neutrons) in an atomic nucleus
Define neutron number (N):
Number of neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
Define isotope:
Isotopes of an element have the same proton number, but different nucleon numbers
Define isotope:
Isotopes of an element have the same proton number, but different nucleon numbers
