Erythematous
Pertaining to redness of the skin.
Eschar
Thick, crusty scar of necrotic tissue on a third degree burn
Exfoliation
A process of skin cells moving away from the body like a leaf falling off a tree.
Allograft
Tissue (skin) for implant (graft) from another person (cadaver).
Extravasation
A process of fluid moving outside of the blood vessel and into the tissues.
Exudate
Composed of oozing fluid.
Follicle
Small thing in the dermis where a hair is formed
Fulguration
A process on the skin that uses a spark of electricity.
Furuncle
Localized, elevated abscess around a hair follicle. Also known as a boil.
Gangrene
Necrosis of the tissue with subsequent bacterial invasion and decay.
Gangrenous
Pertaining to gangrene.
Hematoma
Localized, mass collection of blood
Herpes varicella-zoster
Causes the skin rash of chickenpox during childhood.
The virus remains dormant in the body until it is activated in later life by illness or emotional stress and causes shingles.
Herpes whitlow
Herpes simplex infection at the base of the fingernail.
Homeostasis
Condition of staying in one place and being the same.State of equilibrium of the internal environment of the body.
Hypodermic
Pertaining to below the skin.
Anesthesia
Condition of being without sensation or feeling.
Intradermal
Pertaining to within the skin.
Keratin
Pertaining to within the skin.
Anicteric
Pertaining to being without jaundice of the whites of the eyes.
Linea nigra
Dark, hyperpigmented line in the abdominal skin because of the melanocyte-stimulating hormone during pregnancy.
Lipocyte
Cell that stores fat.
Lunula
Small thing shaped like a moon.
Malignancy
State of having a cancer.
Malignant
Pertaining to intentionally causing harm; cancer.
Melanin
A black pigment that gives color to the skin and hair.
Melanocyte
Cell that makes dark brown or black pigment
