Ch.2 - Atoms, Ions and Compounds Flashcards
Relative charges of proton, neutron and electron
Proton +1
Neutron 0
Electron -1
Relative masses of proton, neutron and electron
Proton 1
Neutron 1
Electron 1/2000
Describe current model of atom (4)
-The nuclear model
-Protons + Neutrons in nucleus and Electrons orbit shells
-Nucleus is very small compared to total volume of atom
-Most of atom’s mass comes for the nucleus as most of atom is empty space
Isotopes
Atoms of the same element (same number of protons and electrons) with different number of neutrons
Explain why different isotopes of the same element react in the same way (3)
-Only difference is neutrons
-Neutrons have no impact on chemical reactivity
-Reactions involve electrons and isotopes have the same number of electrons in the same arrangement
Ions
Charged particles formed when an atom loses or gains electron(s)
Cation
-Positive ion
-Electrons are lost
-Usually formed by metals
Anion
-Negative ion
-Electrons are gained
-Usually formed by non metals
Relation atomic mass
The weighted mean mass of an atom of an element compared with 1/12th of the mass of an atom of Carbon-12
Relative isotopic mass
The mass of an atom of an isotope compared with 1/12th of the mass of an atom of carbon-12
