Geography
Is the science that deals with location of living and nonliving things on the earth and they way they affect one another
What are the five themes of geography?
Region, location, place, environment (interaction), and movement.
Region
A region is apart of the earth that has one or more common characteristics
Ex. The Desert
Location- Absolute
The latitude and longitude of a place
Gods creation of Adam and Eve marks the beginning of _
Human History
Location- Relative
A relative location gives the location of a place relative to some known landmark.
Place
Has distinct characteristics or features
Environment (interaction)
The way the earth is today is a result of the ways in which people have interacted with the environment
Movement
Answers the question,”How do people, goods, and ideas move from place to place?”
Hemispheres
A “ half sphere,” used to refer to one - half of the globe when divided into North and South or East and West
Latitude
Imaginary lines that circle the earth parallel to the equator
Longitude
Imaginary lines that circle the Earth from the North Pole to the South Pole, measuring distance east or west of the Prime Meridian.
Physical Map
A map that shows Land and water features ( mountains, lakes, rivers, etc)
Political map
A map that shows borders countries
Cardinal directions
North, south, east, and west
Migration
To move from one place to another
Culture
The set of beliefs, behaviors, and traits shared by a group of people
Capital
Money and goods used to help people make or do things
Supply
The amount of a good or service that a producer wants to sell
Demand
The amount of something that a consumer wants to buy
Scarcity
The lack of a resource
Opportunity Cost
What is given up, such as time or money, to make or buy something
Recession
A period of slow economic growth or decline
Inflation
A continued rise in prices
Exports
a good that is sent from one country to another
Imports
A good brought into a country from another
Barter
To trade by exchanging one good or service for another; to exchange goods without using money
Federal System
Government which divides power between central and state governments
Separation of Powers
The division of power among the branches of government
Legislative Branch (congress)
Part of government that creates/passes laws. There are two houses of Congress. The Senate has 100 members, two from each state. The House of Representatives has 435 members, the amount of representatives each state has is based on population ( higher population =more representatives)
Executive Branch (President)
Part of government that enforces laws. The president is in charge of this branch
Judicial Branch (the Supreme Court)
Part of a government that interprets the laws (judges them). There are nine members of the Supreme Court. The chief justice is John Roberts.
Representative Government
Government in which citizens elect officials to govern on their behalf
