Ch.15.1 Hydrogen NMR Flashcards
How does NMR work?
A nucleus with an odd atomic number or atomic mass number has a nuclear spin (angular momentum)
How can a proton be SHIELDED?
More electron density surrounding a nucleus
How can a proton be DESHIELDED?
The presence of an electronegative atom (pulls electrons away)
What is indicated at a signal of 0?
The TMS standard! Not a hydrogen of a molecule
What is an enantiotopic proton?
If the molecule has a plane of reflection that makes one proton the mirror image of the other.
They appear homotopic unless in a chiral environment/solvent
What are diastereotopic protons?
protons in a molecule that has 2 chiral centers
Does the NMR pick up ring flips?
No, that happens too quickly, so there’s only one signal
What causes Chemical Shift?
